About Formulated Pellets!
Formulated Pellets, like our 100 % Organic Foundation Formula Pellets offer the best balance of ingredients eaten by the bird and thus should be the main portion of the diet. The manufacturer selectes the ingredients to create an optimal nutritional balance. Due to being ground up and made into a pellet, the bird actually eats all the ingredients rather than just its favorites. Pellets also store well and are easy to explain how to feed to bird sitters if you go to a bird conference or in cases of emergencies. But pellets have less live food content such as important enzymes.
Not all pellets are made the same way. Our certified organic ingredients, mostly seeds, grains and alfafa, are ground up and then pressed together to form the pellet at our own certified organic feed mill.
To produce a harder pellet to reduce waste from parrot eating habits, some companies use an extrusion process where the ingredients are ground up into a paste and then baked at temperatures 250-400 degrees F for long enough to create hard nuggets. We believe the high heat levels for such long time periods used in the extrusion process are destructive to the natural nutrients in the ingredients. We prefer the pressure based Pelletizing process due to its significantly cooler temperatures even though the result is often a softer pellet. In our pellets we add alfalfa which is the richest nutrient land based plant known to man. It is the alfalfa that gives our pellet the green color. The green color is chlorophyl which is easily destroyed by heat or direct sunlight and is a testament to the freshness of our production process.
